The most popular company cars in 2023 by class
Regardless of the vehicle class, electric cars clearly came out on top in the popularity rankings last year. An overview.
The overall ranking of the most popular company cars in 2023 (read here) has already shown that electric vehicles were more popular than ever before among Austrian companies last year. We asked ourselves how widespread the use of electric vehicles is in the individual vehicle classes. Are there any differences? And which models were particularly popular? Based on the orders placed by ALD Automotive and LeasePlan customers, we have determined the most popular models in the most important vehicle classes and can say straight away: Electric vehicles are very popular in all classes.
Two of the top 3 in the compact class are fully electric
With the VW Golf, a combustion engine took first place in the compact class. It is followed immediately by the BMW iX1, the first electric car. The all-electric CUPRA Born - also part of the VW family - completes the top 3. The compact car segment is on the move: More and more manufacturers - especially from China - are entering the market. With them, the range of compact and affordable electric cars is also increasing.
Most popular compact cars in 2023
- VW Golf, diesel - 13.4%
- BMW iX1, electric - 8.4%
- CUPRA Born, electric - 3.4%
Electric cars also dominate top positions in the mid-size class
Two electric cars also made it into the top 3 in the mid-range category, but the undisputed leader in this class (and thus analogous to the overall ranking) is a well-known combustion engine, the Škoda Octavia. Tesla follows in second place with the Model Y and finally BMW in third place with the i4 electric coupé. Overall, the mid-size class was the most popular segment among our customers last year, accounting for around 47% of all orders. This is hardly surprising, as mid-size cars meet the requirements of most fleet managers in Austria in terms of price, equipment and space.
Most popular mid-size cars in 2023
- Škoda Octavia, diesel - 25.7%
- Tesla Model Y, electric - 13.2%
- BMW i4, electric - 11.8%
E-models also very popular in the full-size class
Audi secured the top spot in the luxury class with the all-electric Q8 e-tron premium SUV. It was followed by the Škoda Superb, which was the only combustion model to make it into the top 3. The Mercedes EQE is another electric vehicle in third place. In contrast to the other vehicle classes, an electric car leads the popularity rankings in the luxury class. No wonder: premium electric cars offer particularly long ranges, for example the Mercedes EQE up to 675 km according to WLTP or the Audi Q8 e-tron just under 600 km according to WLTP.
Most popular luxury cars in 2023
- Audi Q8 e-tron, electric - 22.6%
- Škoda Superb, diesel - 19.9%
- Mercedes EQE, electric - 8.8%
Electrification is progressing
Six of the ten most ordered company cars across all classes were already fully electric last year, even if classic combustion models such as the VW Golf or the Škoda Octavia were able to defend their top positions. Demand for electric cars has remained high so far this year. Government subsidies, the continuous expansion of the charging infrastructure and constant technological improvements, particularly in terms of range, are all contributing to this ongoing positive trend. Nevertheless, a much faster spread of electric vehicles is necessary in order to come close to achieving local climate targets. It therefore remains exciting to see how the next few years will develop.
